Winter can be a tough time for residents of the northern states. Going outside is unpleasant. Roads are unsafe. The days are short. The snow from outside tracks inside our homes, vehicles, and businesses, making a mess.

That’s not to say winter is all bad. Snow has a magical quality to it, and activities like ice skating and sledding are plenty of fun. It’s just that the weather can be an inconvenience. Especially if you’re big on gardening and landscaping.

All of the work you’ve put in, piecing together the perfect surrounding for your home is rapidly undone by the snow, ice, and cold. But it doesn’t have to be a complete loss. There are a number of actions you can take to not just prepare your landscape for winter, but keep up and improve its appearance.

Here are some suggestions:

Forever Green

Want to maintain some level of greenery during the winter months? The obvious choice is to place some evergreen trees and bushes around your home. That way, you can look out your window and still see life through the darkest and coldest of days.

Keep the Snow Off

When it comes to both your landscape and your hardscapes, you should be vigilant in removing excess snow. Don’t just shovel your driveway and sidewalks. Keep your patio and benches clear.

Brush the snow off your trees and bushes as well. Otherwise, they’ll become weighed down and misshapen.

Repurpose Summertime Displays

You won’t get much use out of your flower pots and beds during the winter time. While many people choose to take them down altogether, you can leave them in place and set a small evergreen or two inside instead.

This will keep your landscape from looking empty during the winter.

Plant Some Winter Berries

For a little winter time color, consider planting some holly or a crabapple tree around your landscape. Plants like these can hold their berries and fruit through the winter, making them a great standout in the white winters.

Prepare for Spring

Eventually, the snow will melt, the ground will thaw, and your landscape will be full of possibility again. Why not get a head start and begin planning now? That way, you can hit the ground with a running start come spring.
