Masonry has been around a long time. Basically, for as long as man has been making structures. Stack a few stones, add some mortar in the cracks, and you have a home.

The basic concept of masonry has remained the same, but the methods, tools, and uses have grown more advanced. Today, we can create some pretty fantastic things with masonry. It’s particularly popular for patio areas, gardens, and general outdoor hardscaping.

Masonry is a great choice for your hardscaping needs. But first, you need to decide what material you want to use.

Stone

The oldest form of masonry is still a great choice today. Stone masonry offers a unique, highly customizable look. There are many different types of stones and textures to choose from. You can even mix and match stone types as you please.

Even if you created multiple structures out of the same type of stone, and they’d turn out a little bit different every time.

In addition to the unique, customable appearance, stone is strong, highly durable, and weather resistant. Also, since it’s made using natural pieces of the earth, it’s very eco-friendly.

Brick

Though stone might be the oldest, brick is truly the classic masonry material, not to mention the most prominent. Whether you’re in a residential or commercial area, brick is all around. It’s timeless appearance has transcended styles and trends, and for good reason.

It’s easy to work with. It stands out without overpowering the surroundings. It goes with just about everything.

And beyond appearances, it’s highly resistant to heat and fire, and it’s very energy efficient. It also does a great job of absorbing sound.

Concrete

When it comes to masonry, concrete doesn’t refer to a flat slab of concrete, but rather, concrete blocks or cinderblocks.

Due to their large size and density, they allow structures to be built quickly. While concrete works great for base structures, foundations, basements, etc., they have a rather plain, unfinished appearance. If you’re setting up a scenic patio or hardscape, concrete probably isn’t the best choice.

Creating the Perfect Masonry Patio

If you want masonry for your homes exterior, you need an experienced mason. The last thing you need is a patio wall or firepit that’s lopsided and falling apart. Masonry work can last for a very long time, but only if it’s done right.
